Gold and silver prices plunged sharply on Friday, with investors rushing to book profits after recent record highs. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), silver futures for March delivery fell 16.97 per cent, or Rs 67,891, to Rs 3,32,002 per kilogram, marking one of the steepest single-day declines in recent months. Gold futures for February delivery tumbled 9 per cent, or Rs 15,246, to Rs 1,54,157 per 10 grams.The fall followed Thursday’s record highs, when silver surged about 9 per cent to Rs 4,20,048 per kilogram and gold touched Rs 1,69,403 per 10 grams before settling at Rs 3,99,893 per kg for silver. Market analysts linked the decline to weak global trends, a stronger US dollar, and profit-booking by investors.Manav Modi, Commodities Analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said silver and gold prices have hit lower circuit levels today across all formats, including ‘megas’ and ‘minis’ contracts.“This is a strong profit booking that we’ve seen from the higher side, and ETF prices are …down by much more percentage than what we are seeing in the futures,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.The BSE Sensex ended the day at 82,269.78, down 296.59 points, or 0.36 per cent, while the NSE Nifty closed at 25,320.65, slipping 98.25 points, or 0.39 per cent.
